Smartphone Trade-In in Germany: How It Works

Trade-in programs allow you to offset the cost of a new smartphone by submitting your old device. Understanding how trade-in values are calculated and where to compare offers helps ensure you receive a fair price for your old phone.

1. How Trade-In Programs Work

A trade-in involves surrendering your old device to a retailer, carrier, manufacturer, or dedicated service in exchange for a credit or cash payment. The credit is typically applied toward the purchase of a new device, though some services offer direct cash payment.

The general process:

1

Get an online estimate

Most services provide an instant online quote based on the device model, storage capacity, and condition you self-declare. This is an estimate, not a binding offer.

2

Submit the device

Either hand the device in at a physical store or ship it using a prepaid label provided by the service.

3

Physical assessment

The device is inspected and tested. If the condition differs from what you declared, the offer may be revised downward. You typically have the option to decline and have the device returned.

4

Payment or credit

Credit is applied to your purchase or, for cash-back services, transferred to your bank account within a few business days.

2. What Affects Trade-In Value

Trade-in value is influenced by multiple factors:

  • Device model and age: Current flagship models command higher values. Older or less popular models depreciate more quickly.
  • Storage capacity: Higher storage variants have higher trade-in values.
  • Cosmetic condition: Cracks, deep scratches, or bent frames significantly reduce value. Grading systems (often A–C) reflect cosmetic condition.
  • Functional condition: Battery health, screen responsiveness, camera functionality, and all ports/buttons working correctly maintain value. Non-functional components reduce value substantially.
  • Accessories and original packaging: Original box, charger, and documentation may increase the offer slightly, though this varies by buyer.
  • Market timing: Trade-in values drop when a new model is announced or released. Trading in before a new generation launch typically yields better prices.
  • IMEI status: A device reported stolen or on a blacklist cannot be traded in. All legitimate trade-in services check IMEI status.

3. Where to Trade In in Germany

Manufacturer trade-in programmes

Apple (Apple Trade In), Samsung (Samsung Trade-In), and Google (Google Trade-In) operate their own programmes, typically offering credit against new device purchases from their own stores.

Carrier trade-in programmes

Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and O2 accept old devices as part of upgrade offers. Trade-in credit is usually applied against a new contract or device purchase.

Electronics retailer programmes

MediaMarkt and Saturn operate trade-in services that accept devices from any manufacturer when purchasing a replacement at their stores.

Dedicated cash-back services

Companies such as rebuy, Momox Mobile, and similar German services purchase devices for cash. They typically offer lower prices than manufacturer programmes but pay cash rather than store credit, and accept devices independently of a new purchase.

Comparing offers

No single channel consistently offers the highest value across all models. Comparing several services before committing is advisable.

4. Preparing Your Device for Trade-In

  • Clean the device thoroughly — cosmetic presentation affects perceived condition.
  • Repair minor issues if economically justified (though screen repairs are often not cost-effective relative to the increase in trade-in value).
  • Gather the original accessories and packaging if available.
  • Document the device's condition with photos before shipping, to dispute any claim of damage in transit.

5. Data Security Before Trade-In

Before submitting a device for trade-in, ensure all personal data is removed:

  • Back up your data to a computer, cloud service, or new device.
  • Perform a factory reset (Settings → General → Reset on iPhone; Settings → General Management → Reset on Android).
  • Remove iCloud or Google account to prevent activation lock on the next owner's device. An activation-locked device cannot be used by a trade-in service and its value will be reduced to zero.
  • Remove SIM and memory cards before sending the device.
Important: A factory reset removes your data from visible storage but may not erase data permanently on all devices. For maximum security, encrypt the device before performing a factory reset (Android). On iOS, encryption is applied by default when a passcode is set.

6. Alternatives to Trade-In

If trade-in offers are lower than expected, consider:

  • Private sale: eBay Kleinanzeigen and similar platforms often yield higher prices than trade-in, but require more time and involve direct negotiation with buyers.
  • Donation: Organisations such as Labdoo accept functional used devices for educational purposes in underserved communities.
  • Recycling: All German electronics retailers with a certain floor area are required by law to accept old electronics for recycling (§ 17 ElektroG), at no charge to the consumer.
